Into the darkness.... of the early morning.
Our taxi drove into the early morning traffic towards Arlanda airport and I was fully awake and only hoping the rest of the group coming from Väsby would be there on time. But no, we and my daughter's mother-in-law had a long wait at the airport before my daughter (Paola) her husband Mike and the kids (Dev and Dex) arrived. They had overslept, so what else is new! I was getting upset and uptight and the worst was still to come when Meta's ESTA (permission to travel to the United States of America ) had not come through due to a stupid typo! Paola's flinky fingers and steady nerves fixed the problem: she made a new application and paid a new fee on her cell phone and problem solved: we were finally on our way to Tegel Airport in Berlin.
Going through the security control at Tegel in Berlin we
were stopped. The whole security area was cleared doors locked and all
people taken away from the area. The police came in and interviewed,
asked us what was that thing in Margareta's white sports bag, we weren't
sure what they meant (they didn't speak that great English there
either) and then a lady came with a scanner and scanned the bag (we
weren't allowed to open it either) and the results of the scanning were
analyzed and we were finally allowed to proceed. They explained that the
electrity converter margareta had in her bag looked like a bomb.
The
trip between Berlin and Miami was uneventful except a cranky German man
sitting in front of Mikael who complaint of us speaking too loud,
touching his seat etc The food was ok, nothing great and we drank white
wine and beer and tried to sleep a little. Miami was hell. The corridors
were just as long as weremembered the controls took enormous amount of
time, belts removed, shoes removed, the personnel friendly and pleasant
though. We had to claim the baggage and get it re-checked in on Cali
plane. We ran and the kids ran pulling their small trolley bags and I
was getting pain in my chest and had to use my spray. Finally we made it
to the gate and they said finally we, we have been waiting for you.
They had held the plane for us, they said, but we weren't even the last.
The last leg of the the trip was just three hours and a quarter;
finally in Cali and the night was purple and the heat was on.
